People always talk about how it's "every kid's dream" to hit that home run that wins the World Series, like everyone's some juiced up glory hound in waiting. Not me. When I close my eyes and envision that fateful Game 4 with my team up 3-0 in the best of seven series, I'm always shallow in right field and we're winning 6-1. I'm on the team not because I'm a power hitter, or even a decent hitter. My average over the season is probably .245 or so.
It's not like my fielding's amazing, either. Like, when I imagine it, I'm not an All-Star or anything. In fact, maybe I'm only in the lineup because some other guy got hurt.
Anyway, in my baseball fantasy I've got a glove just like this Wilson 12" MLB Baseball Glove, full-grain leather and branded in the palm with the MLB logo just like the pros. So we're up by a comfortable margin and there are two outs in the bottom of the 9th, right? And it's the bottom of the order, too, so their pitcher is up to bat, and his batting average is even worse. Like, maybe .142 or something. He's the pitcher, right? No big deal. So he swings at the very first pitch and hits a high, lazy fly ball right to me. Like, I don't even have to move to get it. I just hold up my Wilson glove and it falls right in.
And the crowd goes nuts, but not really because of anything I did. It's just a relief that the game is over and we won the World Series. And all the guys mob each other at the pitcher's mound, because the pitcher had a really good game, and they're already moseying back to the dugout by the time I jog in from right field. Years later people talk about how it wasn't really a good World Series because it was kind of one-sided and not very entertaining. But I was there. And I made that routine catch.
