Much better than expected.

I just finished assembling my rowing machine and couldn't resist doing a few reps. The assembly was straight forward with clear, easily understood instructions and a picture for each step. I didn't time the assembly process, but I can say that it was not frustrating or tedious. The only glitch in the process was the extra piece of tube that is not called out anywhere in the parts listing or shown anywhere in the pictures. The design is not spartan but, the design doesn't include useless frills or gadgets. I guess the phone holder is the exception to that observation. The frame is very solid feeling and seems quite stable. The handlebars have a soft covering and safety straps to keep you from flying off if your hands slip from their grip of the bars. Getting on and off of the rower takes a little practice, but is not difficult. The resistance bands allow adjustment of the force required to row. The range of resistance seemed reasonable to me, but might be too high or too low if you are at the extremes of the strength curve. Overall, I am quite pleased with my purchase.

Dangerous!!!

Getting on and off is very tricky. Pausing to rest is impossible. To get on you have to put your hands through small padded nylon band’s attached to the handle bars and grip the bars and pull the seat up to meet your butt, assuming you screwed the seat at the right distance and place one foot at a time on the pedal, making sure you don’t wack your other ankle or loose your balance trying not to whack your ankle while gripping the bars and then having the courage to put your weight on the first pedal so you can lift your other foot onto it’s pedal. At this point, if you forgot to attach your phone to count your “steps” as there is no counter or timer (free app to set up, Opps) you have to go through the same process in reverse to get off. I spent a lot of time researching my purchase, but obviously not enough. I should have found a PDF of the user’s manual. I like to think I would have been forewarned and wouldn’t have selected this machine. I was using a HealthRider 40 years ago. It was great, and safe. I would return this if it wasn’t impossible to repack. It’s actually rather beautiful and well made, but very badly designed.
