Packaging was great! Bike is very damaged!
By Jeremy on Reviewed in the United States on March 1, 2025
The delivery was quick and it was very well packaged. I am putting it together for his birthday party in a few hours, and I noticed a lot of damage. Paint is chipped everywhere, but mostly the handlebars. The chain guard is cracked with pieces falling apart. The front right tire had on of the the bolds cross threaded. The paint job is good, but prior to packaging, this bike was handled very roughly. It is a good looking bike, but my son hasn't even seen it yet and it is damaged. I could live with the paint problems, but the broken chain guard and ripped seat are two things that are safety and functionality.

Let me be up front, I paid $179 for this bike. It is the gray L60. I just looked again and the bike is now listed for almost $350. I’m not sure I would pay that for this bike. Not because it’s not worth that, but because I would probably buy a higher end brand for the same price. But, that’s just me.I bought this for my son on his 9th birthday. He is very tall for his age at a little over 5 feet. According to the specs, he would be on the bottom end of the height range for this bike and it fits him perfectly. I am 6’ 2”, 250 pounds and I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this bike for myself based on the dimensions. The handlebars are a really nice height for me to ride.I could not find out what the exact material the frame is, but it is very light. I was hoping to get him a Chromoly frame, and I would say that this would fit in that weight range. Everything is very stout and tight. I would not personally hesitate to take this bike to the park and jump it… Which I did. The crank did not flex at all, and I really love how fat the tires are. All around, I am impressed with the bike. The paint job had a nice detail in it near the welds to mimic a heat blemish, which is a throwback to the old days, when chrome bikes were welded and the heat would blemish the chrome and turn it a rainbow color. The only Cons that I really found with the bike was under the fork where the neck stem passes through the fork and is welded in place, there was a really bad cut and weld. There are also a hint of rust on a few parts of the bike. I’m assuming from being shipped overseas from China. The metal Mongoose decal for the front of the head stem was a stick on thing. It may be that kids these days want a clean look and they did that as an option.Other than those things, I can’t find anything else mechanically or geometrically wrong with the bike. To be clear, this is not a Walmart licensed product. This is a mongoose bike produced by mongoose or the company that owns mongoose.p.s. it wouldn’t be a bad idea to make sure that the neck, crank and wheel hubs are all at the correct tightness. They feel a little tight out of the box. This is super easy to do yourself, but if you’re unsure, just take it to a bike shop.
L60 Grey! Best Value BMX while it lasts!

Was looking to get back into BMX. I mean I'm buying a BMX for my 5yo son (wink). Just wanted something like I had in the 90s. Everything was $200 and above. Walmart has a Mongoose Rebel X1 for $182 that I almost bought. Then suddenly, as if reading some kind of chip implanted in my brain, or device, Amazon shines light on the Mongoose Legion Intermediate L60 in Grey for $153. The listing photo does not match and shows a L20 grey but the listing "Part Number" comes back as the proper L60 in grey and is what you get. I wait and the price goes to $155 but with a 20% off coupon. No brainer from there. The Legion 60 is an upgrade from the Rebel X1 which I match most to the Legion 20 from what I can verify and see in photos. The L60 has a sealed rear hub and sealed head design that makes it superior to the L20 and the L40 which had a sealed rear hub. The L60 does not come with pegs but the front axle will accept 3/8 pegs or the Mongoose Freestyle Steel Pegs. The rear axle is 14mm so you need larger diameter pegs for the rear. The rear-axle has plenty of thread left for pegs. The seat tilt is fixed. The head part of the frame already has slots ready for a gyro brake system but the L60 does not have the system installed. The frame is Hi-Ten steel which I don't mind and is what I had back then anyway and you cant really find chromoly frame builds for less that $300. $130.37 out the door on this bike for what it has is a super duper deal. It is made in China but for an OEM bike, I could never build something like this for that price. A frame and maybe wheels without tires is most I'd get under $150.Congrats to all who got the L60 in grey at a great price. Thanks Amazon for the super ai deals and Mongoose for still making and baking.
Mongoose, still a good bicycle.

Item arrived early! My 11 year son, roughly 75lbs loves the bike. It fits him well. We built it up in less than 1 hour. The brake ( rear cable break) is not very good so most people may end up completely swapping it out for a upfgraded version. I ended up having to take the bike to the local bike shop to see if their mechanic could get the break adjusted correctly and he improved it slightly but its still will not grab the tire and fully stop it. If he is going down a hill the bike brake will NOT stop the tire. the brake pads continually slid along the rim when depressed only slowing the bike. I am considering sanding the rim with 220 grit to see if a rough or milled type edge might create more friction for the pads to grab. I have not done that yet, because I wanted to see if the brakes work better after a break in period. The mechanic speculated that since the rim was not milled and the black paint on the rim was slick, it caused slippage. Over all the rest of the components are decent for bike that was under $250.
Good bike for the money

My son likes it. Welds look good. All components except brakes are good quality. The brakes are the only issue. No matter what adjustments I made (and believe me, I made them all), they were basically useless. But, I purchased a new inexpensive set of brake pads that had good reviews on Amazon. And I also switched the brakes to the standard cable option, instead of the bmx brake mechanism that allows the handlebars to rotate 360 degrees. I used a brake system I had lying around to accomplish this. With these two cheap DIY upgrades, the bike now stops on a dime, leaving 9 cents of change. I would recommend this bike to anyone needing a bike for their kids. Changing the brake system with your child is a great intro into bike ownership and maintenance!

This is the second model of Mongoose we have purchased for our son who spends his free time riding his bike. He does not go easy on these and they have held up so well! The quality is amazing, it’s very user friendly and the brakes work very well. My son loved the way the bike looks and the bike was very easy to assemble
Hole in tube

I purchased this bike for my 12 year old son for Christmas. I would give it 5 stars if there wasn’t a small cut in one of the tubes. I did get it at a discounted price. Other than the cut in the tube the bike looks brand new. There isn’t enough time to send it back and another one be here by Christmas, so I purchased a tube instead.
Yes! Mongoose is back to the good stuff!!!

Just get one. This is Mongoose like in the 80's and early 90's. Not the junk crap that Walmart and other department stores still sell. Avoid those like the plague! But then, that's apparent to any real BMX rider. Those are all flash for what little you pay and no real quality. If you already have one of those, strip it down to the bare frame and only the frame and build everything else up from scratch. That's those bikes only hope. This on the other hand is fine the way it comes. Ok, may have to make a few tweaks and whatnot along the way, but that's to be expected of even the best BMX bikes. It's part of riding and making it your own. I do wish they'd have given it at least a somewhat taller seat post, and I'm also not crazy about how the seat is permanently attached to the seat post as well. Normal seat and seat post setup is, if the seat wears out or isn't to your liking, you can just stick a new seat on the seat post. Here, you have to replace both. Was expecting something like a pivoting seat post or perhaps the old bolt down kind. On the other hand, the seat that's here, by BMX standards, is plenty acceptable until I upgrade. I got the L60 and I'm not sure it mentions it in the details, but it appears as though it's sporting a rear wheel that's sealed while the front wheel is not sealed. But the L60 is totally the midrange offering of the whole Legion lineup. So it's expected that a few things are somewhat average, besides, the rear wheel is where you want and need a better quality one at, uh, if you're going to cut corners that is. Also, contrary to what I'm seeing in other reviews here, the brakes do work surprisingly well. More than adequate. The bike arrived perfectly and overall inspection found one very minor blemish. Top tube on left side has like a weird smudge in the paint job that then glossed over for it's final painting. I tried Goo Gone thinking it might have just been grease, it's kind of a blackish color against green giving that effect sorta, but after a good rubbing it remains unchanged, so I can tell it's permanently on there. Both very minor and totally cosmetic, a classic error no doubt the result of being mass produced. Everything else is brilliant here plus I caught a sweet sale on mine and got it for only $146.87 + tax. Arrived quickly, packaged well, everything is in perfect condition, so yeah, I'll excuse one little minor smudge. Thank you Mongoose!!!!
