A rugged well built piece of equipment with A DIMMER KNOB!
By SigDigit on Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2017
Strong clean light with pleasant glow from diffuser on lower brightness levels. I especially like the amber night light feature, found it perfect for getting up in the middle of the night in a crowded cabin with least amount of disturbance for the rest of my camping companions. Appears to be ruggedly designed, and I like the folding bail style handle. Battery compartment access is well engineered. This lantern lit up my cabin nicely. Of course, any thing using 4 D cells will have some heft, to be expected. But for the weight you get long run time and very bright light on demand. 5 stars for having an infinitely adjustable brightness knob. Although not the powerhouse my dual mantle liquid fuel lantern is, it is bright enough, does not get hot, runs silently, and can be used indoors. Perfect for the cabin camping I do and emergency use back home.

FAULTY SWITCH MECHANISM DIES WITHIN A COUPLE OF MONTHS - BUT REPAIR IT!
By David Mevis on Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2017
PLEASE . . . read the whole review to see what extended (2 months) of use leads to!WOW! These lanterns are certainly bright! They may or may not suit your purpose, but they are going to work great for us!We will be using them to replace "shore powered" lighting in our home as we more further "off grid" Three of these in the living room and two in each bedroom will mean LOTS of light and NO ELECTRIC BILL! We'll be using our solar grid to keep LSD D-Cells recharged for swapping. Don't hesitate to get these if you need lots of reliable light!***UPDATE***We're so pleased with these we've ordered MORE! GREAT lanterns!***UPDATE TWO***Been using these lanterns regularly for a while now . . . Regularly meaning a couple are the primary light source in our bedroom. They are in use every night before we go to sleep. I read before bed, so they are in use for a while every night. I also sometimes use the "nightlight" function if I'm expecting to get up in the dark. I can use the lantern for well over a week . . . even two weeks . . . before recharging the batteries. MUCH better power consumption than I expected! We're so pleased . . . we're about to order even more! We'll have a total of about 8 of these providing the primary light in the rooms of our home!UPDATE TWO!!! - 03 January 2018Purchased originally on 12 October . . . Was beyond thrilled. Bought several. Now for the BAD NEWS . . . Two original lanterns began showing the reported switch problems about a week ago . . . today, the switch on one completely broke off in my hand refusing to turn. I disassembled the lantern to see if I could fix it only to discover the "switch" is not a switch. It's a circuit board with a rotating "stator" attached to the knob. There's a little spring held "detent" piece that springs out when the "switch" housing is opened. It would appear that this "detent" mechanism is the culprit. Apparently, it gets out of alignment or something and prevents the "switch" knob from rotating.I am VERY disappointed. In fact . . . I'm removing four stars because these GREAT lanterns are GOING to fail with very little use. I was planning to buy several more, but no way. If CORE can fix the switch issue these are GREAT lanterns, but as they are currently constructed, they are a money wasted after only two months.CORE . . . Hear me??? If you can fix this issue, I'm open to revising my rating and review . . . BUT . . . if I'm stuck with crap unusable lanterns, I warn EVERYONE to AVOID THESE UNTIL THE PLANNED FLAW IS FIXED.UPDATE : REPAIR YOUR STUCK KNOB!!!Attached are photos detailing the process to fix the stuck knob. It will no longer have a "detent" feature, but the lantern will work fine other than that! The entire "operation" should only take about 10-15 minutes.Back up to THREE STARS after repairs! CORE assures me that this is a problem only in this "batch" and I notice they are not available now . . . hopefully they are reworking the issue, especially after I did the troubleshooting and field repair work for them. LOL

Great Lantern

A great lantern that is well worth the $30 price tag. This is the 4 D-cell model and I believe the 750 lumen claim is probably very close. I already dropped on a hard cement floor and it's still ticking. I guess it's not waterproof but I can tell you a hard rain had no adverse effect. I like the ajustable dial just turn it to the brightness level you want. None of this push once for low, twice for medium and three times for high stuff. The night light has a nice warm orange glow. I like it much better than the red lights other lanterns offer. As I read other reviews a few people seem upset that the dial that controls the brightness level is not completely stepless. My reaction is - "picky picky". It's true it's not but I count eight different levels.

Pros: Amazing amount of light from this lantern - should light the entire campsite on our next camping trip. Also like that it has several settings - the brightest will be great for clean-up after dinner, but might be annoying to neighboring campsites in a campground. The middle setting will easily allow us to move around the campsite, and might even be enough for after-dinner clean-up. The nightlight setting will be too much to sleep to, but won't overpower us in a tent. Feels sturdy in your hands, battery compartment seems to seal well to keep moisture out. If D-cell batteries really do last, we should be set. No mantle to fuss with, nice reflective light-box interior.Cons: Not many - Heavy with the batteries, so better for car/camper camping. Two mangled screws were shaking around the interior of the battery compartment when we opened the box, and we can see where they should be connecting the inside of battery box to outer housing. Called the customer service number today. Now we'll see how consumer-oriented the Core Equipment Company is. Update to follow ...

After picking up one of these and a 500 lumen I was immediately impressed in the quality of this lantern! The night light mode is orange and not so bright that it would keep you awake. The dimmer is solid and works fantastically. And it's bright! You can't look into the diffuser it's so bright! If you need a lantern for camping or for emergency lighting you cannot get better than this. I love how this performed during hurricane Irma so much I just went and put another on order! Quick hint from the reviews... the center of the handle does rest up against the globe when lowered and I could see where it could scratch it. Simple fix! I just wrapped some adhesive backed hobby foam around that spot and presto! Problem solved!!! You won't be dissatisfied with this lantern!
Excellent Emergency Light Source

Purchased the smaller unit of this and now have bought the larger size. Provides and excellent, convenient emergency light source. My only complaint is the markings showing the battery positions. I do not keep batteries loaded in the unit as only use it for emergencies but then with no light, finding the positions is a challenge. The markings could be better.

I have had many lanterns over the last few years, this is one of the best with the features it has. Love the orange glow on the night light and the knob control for different levels of white brightness, very smooth and works great! It is an awesome light for the price!

I bought this lamp really because of the dimmer knob. I am growing tired of the 10000000 Lumen lamps that have 2 modes or even 1 so that when the power goes out and you can't see , you turn on your lantern and its so bright .. well you can't see.Starting with the switch: - It is one click down for night light and one click up for turning on the light. After turning on the light you just dial in your brightness. - The actual dial is not a potentiometer from what I can tell. It appears to just have many different contacts for like 7 or 8 different brightness levels and there is no grease of any kind in the dial so it feels like chalk on a chalk board when turning (I ended up correcting this a bit) - The outside light covering is a plastic that I am going to just guess here .. will scratch like crazyThe light:- Is is bright and dispersed well. I love the fact you have so many different brightness settings. - A lot of people have pointed out that the night light mode uses a lot of battery power compared to the low setting of the main light. While that is true and seems silly it could be that the different red/orange led used for the night light helps you keep your night vision.Build:- Its very easy to get to the switch - remove 4 screws from the base and then 2 more for the switch.- Handle seems well built- It appears to be well balanced as I don't feel like it will fall over easy although there are no rubber feet of any kind so it will slip around.Conclusion:- I paid 29.99 for this. I feel like 29.99 is a fair price for what your getting. If this light was 19.99-24.99 it would be a steal.

We own a cabin in the mountains, and some nights, it's so dark, one cannot see at all. This little light is all you need to feel secure when going out at night to let the dogs out for potty breaks. Fantastic light source, and I feel very secure with this in my hands. Perfect size, about 13" tall and not heavy. Great gift for a camper or one that loses power often. Needs 4 "D" cell batteries; I always take these out when not in use and tape them to a Ziploc style bag to the side of the lantern when not in use.If you need a brighter light, they are probably out there, but we found this one to be wonderful! Hope this helps you decide.
