Great trail shoe
By S. Lucas on Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2016
Bought these to prepare for a fifty mile ultra. So far I've only done 7 miles at one time with them but they solved a foot problem I have developed from under supported shoes. They have a feel that I have never had from a shoe of cradling every part of your foot so you never lose contact like other shoes. Definitely recommended for off road running.Update: I should've done this a long time ago but better late than never. I put hundreds of miles on these in preparation for and in the race. They held up perfectly to some rough terrain in the NW Georgia mountains. My buddies were slipping around in the snow and I was able to remain fairly stable and comfortable. Naturally after the Ultra marathon training and race these shoes were done but nothing lasts forever. I'm a Salomon guy now. As a matter of fact I'm wearing a pair of Salomon boots while I'm typing ;)

Who ever thought shoelaces would make such a big difference?

Not as aggressively soled as the Speedcross 3 the Vario is made for pavement and light trails or ball fields. They have minimal toe protection for rocky terrain and the conventional lacing system is a disappointment compared to the Salomon's unique kevlar/one pull system that stays in place and is easily adjustable when muddy or wet. The Speedcross Vario's lacing system is ordinary and inconvenient when needing to adjust or retie on the trail which seems often. I say these Speedcross Vario trail shoes are expensive because they seem no better than other trail shoes, and lacking the Salomon lacing system these shoes are ordinary. One thing I can say is that the Speedcross Vario look great, keeping with the design philosophy behind all the Salomon running shoes, Men and Women. If Salomon just used their unique lacing system I would give these shoes another 1-1 1/2 stars.
