Great for EDC and utility! SOLID KNIFE!
By Rocket Scientist on Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2014
How about a simple "average joe" review of this knife? Yes?? Ok well here it comes... I needed a new EDC blade because I completely wore out my old one, and this one fits the bill nicely! Do I love it? eh.. do I like it A LOT? Absolutely. It comes out of the box sharp enough to shave arm hair. The pocket clip carries deep, although it was very tight and I needed to bend it a little to make it more "user friendly" with different pants materials. No biggie there. It deploys faster than my S&W SpecOps auto. It feels real good in the hand. Traction wise, jimping could be better, but it's not as terrible as some people make it out to be. For my everyday uses like slicing cardboard, rope, opening packages, you know, cuttin stuff... it gets the job done. Could I use it for self defense? Sure! You don't need the latest tactical marvel to defend yourself. Anything sharp will do. I'm sure this one would punch through multiple layers of clothing and/or flesh it ever came to that. Hope it doesn't, but hey.. just being real. How about food prep? Eh.. I wish it were bigger. For something like onions, its a bit tricky, but smaller items like carrots or celery are just fine. If I had nothing else except this knife, I wouldn't go hungry. Some also complained that it's too heavy. It does have some heft to it, I'm not gonna lie, but you can easily get used to it. I carry this blade every single day, and it took me only a few days to forget it's there. As far as I'm concerned, the weight is a non-issue. It's not like you're carrying a brick with a knife attached. As for durability, this is my go-to knife for daily tasks and I have used it for just about every material I can think of. Would I baton with it? hell no. It could probably handle it, but why? I've had this Cryo II for about a year... never sharpened it, never adjusted it. It has begun to have a little, ever so slight side-to-side movement, which less than a quarter turn on the pivot screw took care of. Lockup is still solid as a rock! Just my opinion here, but you just can't beat a Hinderer frame lock. I would buy this knife over and over again if/when my first one breaks. Do yourself a favor, DON'T buy it at any stores. They want close to DOUBLE the price that Amazon wants. Save yourself a ton of dough and just order it here! It's cheap enough that if you don't like it, you can give it to someone less fortunate! Overall it's a solid knife that requires little to no maintenance other than cleaning and periodic lube. It's a great all-around EDC utility knife! Get yours today! You won't be disappointed!

and the handle has a better built quality
By True on Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2016
I bought both the Tanto blade and the more popular drop point blade version. I bought two of each. The Tantos seem to have been built by another factory, and the handle has a better built quality. Pros: The screws on the handle are more flush, the lanyard hole is bigger and has chamfers cut at both ends. They use Teflon or some sort of delrin washers for the blade pivot hole. The back of the blade aligns perfectly with the handle. The blade also has no play when open. The Tanto also keeps its spine thickness all the way to the tip compared to the drop point version. I've shown this in a photo. The tanto blade version snaps open quicker with a more satisfying click sound. I think this is due to the blade being lighter, so it opens quicker. The locking feature on both tantos was much better cut and the lock engages halfway through. cons: The only downside is the cutting edge of the tando design, very poorly manufactured. You can see in the photo I have actually ground the edge down on a flat stone to make it straight. In one of the photos you can see how badly the other tanto is compared to the one I have corrected. Had to remove about .020" of material to make it straight and now have to sharpen it. The curved cutting edge is also not a perfect curve, at one end the curve becomes flat. The whole point of buying the tanto is the shape of the cutting edge, so why they are sending out poorly ground edges doesn't make sense. The drop point version: Pros: The cutting edge is nicely manufactured and came sharper that the tanto. Cons: The handle has some sharp edges that were not ground smooth from the factory. The back of the blade (spine) doesn't align with back of the handle and seats about .020" lower. Lanyard hole noticeably smaller, no chamfers cut. Screws on the frame seat higher compared to the tantos (I tried to tighten and they were all tight). They used screws with a shorter heads on the tantos handle. Screws are different on the drop point blade version, screw heads are taller so they stick up more. Blade has a little play compared to the tanto version I got. The locking feature is not cut as nice as the tanto version and engagement is only 1/4 of the way. I suspect this will improve with use. Blade opens slower, with a dual sound click. (The Tantos open faster). The unlocking safety washer is not seating flush and is crooked. The counter bore may have some burrs needing to be removed for it to seat flush. I don't know if this would be a pro or con but the drop point version uses copper washers for the blade pivot hole. The thumbstud is useless on both knifes, have to put a lot of force on it to open both blade types and have to flick your wrist hard. They should just remove it, the flipper on the blade is enough. I like the weight and the grip feel on both knives. I thought they would be slippery but their not, do think that they are too big for daily carry. I may consider buying the smaller Cryo with G10 handle Amazon has both the black wash version and stone wash version for sale at a cheaper price than these two. Overall the tanto version seems to have a slightly better built quality minus the crappy cut blade edge. I bought them from Amazon. I have read that these lower priced knives online are factory rejects, but I doubt it. I think they just have a poor quality control and management resulting in knives like these getting on the market. Non of these should have left the factory the way they did.
