Love this lockbox.

I bought this with the intention of using it to lock up my M&P Shield at home from my 3 year old son, and also to use in the future when traveling on an airline. The construction of this item is SOLID. I'm confident that there is no way my son could pry, smash, or MacGyver his way into this lockbox. It has decent weight to it which makes me think the material used is sufficient. The locking mechanism is smooth and both keys work no problem. The cable included with mine was the one wrapped in black plastic. It seems hefty enough to stop smash and grab thieves if used in your car. Since i'm planning on using it with my M&P Shield, i was going to place it horizontally aling the long axis of the lockbox when traveling on an airline. To my delight, it actually gmfits along the short axis as well, allowing me to fit multiple mags or a box of ammo into the lockbox, for those airlines thst require the ammo to be in an original box (i'm planning on putting my ammo in a Magtech 9mm 50rd box). There are 4 sheets of foam that come inside the lockbox to cushion belonging. The Shield will fit fine with the 4 sheets, though very snug (its not moving around in there when locked). Perhaps i will remove one sheet, who knows. Overall i am highly satisfied with this lockbox. If you need something to store yoir firearm away from the kiddies hands, dont hesitate, this will be more than adequate. There isn't a prefabricated way to mount this lockbox to any furniture but you can probably drills holes into it to use as mounting points.

Good Enough... It depends

Edit: Hornady sells the same type of box with a tubular lock already, so no need to retrofit a tubular lock. It costs about the same. I would get the Hornady safe then put a chain on it. Good enough... If youre using it for your home, just to keep kids out. Keeping honest people out, etc... Ive used it multiple times to fly and didnt get any hassles from TSA. Box construction is well made, I don't see any gaps that a screwdriver could easily pry. Bad if... You're using it to secure valuables in your car. 1st, the cable could easily be cut even with a thicker gauge security cable. I can't recommend security cables, any type or thickness. 2nd, the lock is junk. It could be opened with everyday household items. Coffee stirrer, knife, screwdriver, paper clips, etc... Mods... I have this box now dedicated as a pistol car safe. I cant carry at work and travel a lot to places that I don't know what the crime rate is, and need to leave the CCW in the vehicle. This might be a bit much for some but not enough for others. So you do what you think is best. But, if you're serious about keeping your items more resistant to theft in your vehicle, this box needs some simple upgrading. - 5/16x1.5" elevator bolt, nuts and washers. Under $5. Need to drill the hole bigger. An eye bolt could work too, but probably need another lock. - Harbor Freight 3/8x3' chain and U Lock, $20. - Admiral 5/8 tubular cam lock, $8. Had to cut the latch shorter to fit. Cheap lock could still be picked with a picking tool but works better than the original lock.
