Versatility plus quality.

I was in a quandary. I wanted to mount a shotgun scabbard on the back of my tactical vest. There are plenty of really good, well made and fairly prices shotgun scabbards out there to choose from.....until your realize that virtually NONE of them will readily accept something like a Rem 870 or a Mossberg 590 sized shotgun if you mount any furniture on it. Example....add a side plate for 12 gauge reloads, a barrel mounted flashlight, a door breaching barrel attachment, etc.....and the scabbard that used to fit well.....no longer fits. Or, if it does fit, you tear the hell out of the inside of the scabbard or need three men, a mule and a small boy to shove the gun in and remove it. I have talked to many of my friends who bought shotgun scabbards only to be disappointed when their shotguns wouldn't fit once any furniture was added. After much thought, I purchased this smaller sized, rifle scabbard....based on the dimensions rather than the product description. When I compared the dimensions to that of the shotgun scabbard, I found it had a few inches more room down towards the end as well a an adjustable barrel length. I found that, not only did it accommodate both my AR carbine with a 30 round mag comfortably....but also my Zustava ZPAP M 70 AK47 and my modified Remington 870 with no problems. Well.....almost no problems. I did find that if you loaded the 870 in a hurry that the serrated edges of the breaching attachment would catch in the inner liner and tear it. Problem solved by putting a piece of painters tape around and over the muzzle before loading it. The tape comes off from friction when you remove the shotgun but keeps the serrations from snagging the nylon going into the scabbard. Four Molle attachments on this scabbard and the quality of stitching and snaps is on par with pretty much every other scabbard I have seen. The 870 is not lose in the scabbard like I was afraid it would be. So....if you are in a dilemma about what to do with your tricked out shotgun and decent, well made scabbard.....this rifle scabbard just may be the answer you have been looking for. It was for me.

Doesn't fit as advertized.

Ok, lets do a quick rundown, I bought this as a cheap scabbard to take a rifle, or shotgun on various outdoor excursions. The intended purpose was to use it for hands free hiking so I could focus on my walking stick etc. I knew going into this that it might not work with a shotgun without pistol grip. For the Record I tried this with my Benelli MR1 Rifle. Benelli Nova Tactical, and several .22 rifles including a Daisy, and an air rifle by Gamo. I fully expected however that it would fit nicely over my Benelli MR1 5.56 and my .22 bolt action. After trying every configuration I could think of I found the following: 1: Shotgun wasn't a good fit as all (kind of expected this), it was loose, would easily fall out if I leaned the wrong way and it didn't balance well on my back under any configuration. I spent more time and concentration trying to adjust the position of the scabbard than I would using a common sling with Africa Carry Posture. So on a LONG hike in deep eastern woodlands (perfect place for a Shotgun for hunting or scouting), I would be both noisier, and distracted... 2: The Benelli MR1 was NOT a good fit into this at all, In addition to being unbalanced, it BARELY fit into this thing with a scope on it, and the majority of it's weight was at or beyond the opening of the scabbard so if the retaining strap wasn't buckled, it would never stay in place. Further more, with a full 30 round magazine, even with the slot unzipped, the pistol grip was barely within reach of the retaining strap, which put added pressure on the magazine, which while harmless this time, is not something I like to do long term. Bottom line - This scabbard is well made for the money and will probably last at least little while on the trail, but wont fit anything like what I own, and even when the .22's DID fit the normal slings I use worked better. What I would have changed: Size: I would have added the ability to adjust the size and tightness with additional straps. I would have also made it longer. Shoulder Strap: Not as comfortable as advertized, the metal D rings and buckles dug into me, and on a long walk, it would have been bad news. Part of the problem was due to weight distribution... Weight Distribution: Too back heavy, the whole rig wanted to "roll" over my shoulder and hang almost from my hip, even when adjusted to be fully tight. I don't have a Molle rig vest, but I don't think that would have improved things at all. This position for the scabbard isn't that bad if this was a normal sling, My shotgun sling for example when spanning my back from shoulder to hip is very comfortable... IT doesn't try to roll as much. How I would fix the distribution issue? In my experience this isn't too easy, but you could raise the point of contact with the weapon to be ABOVE it's center of mass so that the rifle HANGS in the Scabbard rather than pushes it down. Bottom line, I'll just wrap my weapon in waterproof canvas when it rains and sling it like normal and or use a quick release sling under my poncho. Buyer beware, treat this like a pair of shoes without a size stamped into em... Try before you buy, or in this case, be prepared to send back for refund. Why I rated 3 stars: Honestly I would rate it lower but the value for the cost is there if the scabbard fits your weapon and you can adjust it to be comfortable. So if your weapon fits this thing I'm sure it will be a good purchase. For 25$ even if it only lasts you for a few long trips or as a lighter rifle bag for the range, you will not go wrong, but you could go better. hence the 3 stars. for the record - I'm sending mine back.
