Best beach shelter for the money
By John on Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2021
First of all this is my third Coleman Sun Shelter. The first one lasted several years after much abuse by sun and salt at the beach. When it finally got old we loved it so much we ordered another one. Unfortunately, Hurricane Sally destroyed that one shortly after we bought it(it wasn't assembled at the time, just in a storage shed) along with many other things we owned. So, we had to order another one to replace that one. It arrived and appeared fine, just as you would expect. Upon putting it up at the beach the first time I noticed a slight imperfection in the canopy itself. It wasn't something that would make it unusable, just something that would have diminished its total lifespan. This is where I was truly impressed. I took a couple photos of the imperfection while we were at the beach. I emailed Coleman customer service the following morning. Within an hour, I had a response asking for a bit more details and my purchase receipt. Before the end of the day, Coleman customer service had agreed to send an entire replacement, at no additional cost, to me. It arrived this week in perfect condition. Now for the actual product review. This is about 35 to 40 pounds. It is heavier than the offbrand canopies but comes with a carrying case that has wheels to make it easier to transport. Those wheels are of course almost useless on the loose sand but great for moving it to and from the vehicle and parking lots. Most average people can easily toss it on their shoulder for the final trek thru the sand. It does include carrying straps on the bag. This is extremely easy to setup with at least 2 people. The cheaper ones are no where near as sturdy as this one and just don't hold up to the wind, sun and salt. I will say it's imperative that you spray this off after every use as sand will make the slides and locks inoperable after only a few uses if you don't. If you simply spray it down with freshwater after each use, it will last a long time. This canopy, unlike the cheaper ones has a wind vent at the top that is a must when you are using it at the beach. The sudden gusts of wind will lift the others and destroy them while this one remains standing. We set it up at its tallest setting, there are 3 settings, and then use our feet to dig about 6 inches into the sand, we then place the legs in those holes and push the sand back over them. We have watched many other types of canopies be flipped and ours will still be standing strong. During extremely rough winds we occasionally use the supplied, preattached ropes to anchor it to our cooler carrying handle, just to be safe. I highly recommend getting the optional sunscreen that covers one side. It makes the entire covered portion usable instead of having the sun intrude on one side. When we go to the beach we plan on staying for the day so as the sun moves, we simply pick the canopy up and turn the sunscreen to the side where the sun is now at instead of moving the screen every time. All of our friends love this canopy and we've watched them go thru multiple cheap ones while we continued to use the same one. Spend the little bit of extra money and get this one. The quality is great and it will last a long time if you take care of it.

30+ YEAR COLEMAN CUSTOMER - DO NOT BUY UNTIL COLEMAN ADDRESSES CONNECTIONS
By REP on Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021
I have been a Coleman customer for over 30 years. They have very good products, but not this one. After my first canopy failed at connections, Coleman sent me a free replacement and upgraded model. After this replacement was starting to fail after the 2nd use, I decided to look closer at what the problem is. It turns out that the connections on all of their models are made of plastic and molded at joints and destined to fail. The first picture is with the free replacement that Coleman sent me. After 2 uses there are a few connections that are already failing and so decided to dismantle it and keep the connectors for use on my old one. This of course will not last but hopefully will get another year out of it. The 2nd picture shows why the connectors break so easily. You can see by the arrows where the plastic is molded together right where the screws go. It only takes a slight amount of stress on these joints before they start cracking and separating. IT ALMOST SEEMS THAT THESE WERE DESIGN TO FAIL BASED ON WHERE THEY ARE MOLDED TOGETHER. The 3rd picture shows a closer look at the connector where one can see the seam of the molded plastic at the joint. A better design for this would have been to make the connectors out of metal and then the canopy would last for YEARS like the earlier models did several years back. It is frustrating that Coleman would sacrifice their integrity for a poor design such as this and continue to offer this to the consumer. I will plan to talk with Coleman further in order to hopefully persuade them to change this design flaw as only seems in their best interest to do so.
