It's a mobile sculpture created by Theo Jansen. It's essentially a big, creepy, sentient scaffolding. It's made of plastic piping. It uses wind and air pressure to move on its own.
Jansen thinks of the Strandbeests as actual life forms. He says with improvement over time, they've "become increasingly better at surviving the elements." His plan is for Strandbeest subspecies to live on beaches. They will evolve and learn and evolve some more.
Jansen's Strandbeest has elicited all manner of philosophical questions about what life is and how species adapt.
