Why won't Woot ship to me in MA. I know for a fact that I can go down to Walmart or BassPro and buy the same exact model...hell I don't think I have even ever been ID'd while buying an airgun in MA. This makes me angry WOOT!

Too many criminals getting smarter. Paint a Glock 40 bright pink, and it still kills. Happened in some shootings a couple of years ago.

Every time I see an air gun on Woot, I get all excited, and then remember their stupid shipping restrictions.

I live in Scranton...it's worse: You can BUY an airgun and you can have one shipped. However, it's illegal to OWN one. So I can have it shipped here, and I can buy one at K-Mart. But as soon as I walk back into Scranton city limits, I'm a criminal.

Never mind the hi-cap Ruger in my pocket. That's fine. But if I have an AIR GUN...whoa... look out!

Come to think of it...it's the same with fireworks in this screwed up city. You can buy all you want, that's legal. But you can't OWN them...uhm....huh!?

Blame the people you elected into office, not Woot. Take a gander at the Wine.woot site sometime. I can't have anything shipped to me FROM WOOT, but I have found a few things that I can buy at the state-own monopoly that sells hooche in this state (it's actually a commonwealth). A couple times, I've been told that I can even have the exact same thing shipped to me by the monopoly, just not from anyone outside the state.

It's the state/local laws that prevent it, not Woot.

Oh, it will definitely shoot through windows if you're within a few hundred feet, though not from the same distance that a .22 firearm will.

This no toy, and playing with it as though it was could get you three low quality meals a day, access to a yard with weight lifting equipment, and very secure living accommodation which you get to share with an extremely friendly guy named Bubba.

This is no gun for a child to even have access to except under an adult who understands it's danger. The muzzel velocity of the air rifle is about the same as a .22 caliber long bullet loaded with a 38 grain bullet. With the premium pellet, it shoots just as fast as a .22 standard velocity bullet. In other words, you could easily kill an adult with a well placed shot at 50-100 yards. My father, an avid hunter and Army firearms instuctor forbid me and my two brothers to even have any pistol or rifle, only shotguns. Buy your kid a bb gun and keep it locked up when you aren't around.

The rifle uses a breakover mechanism with an extremely strong spring. The breakover is a single action performed between every shot and loading is done while the breech is open. Once again, the spring is very strong and difficult for some adults. If your child is very strong they might be able to operate the mechanism. Along those same lines, this is a full size rifle and the length of pull (distance between the trigger and the butt stock) may be a bit long for a twelve year old. I have the hunter version of this rifle (basically the same gun just not as many bells and whistles) and use it regularly at targets up to 80 yds in my back yard. This is not a toy. Your children may be able to fire it but you may have to load and operate the mechanism and ensure they are closely supervised while shooting. Common .22lr ammo can be 900-1700 fps so this is a very powerful air rifle. Recoil should not be an issue. There is very little, only from the release of the spring energy.

I recently purchased a Gamo Big Cat. I believe the internals are the same between these two. No noise damper on mine, but it is still pretty quiet. Believe me, these are way more powerful than the pumpmasters etc. I used to play with as a kid. I can lethally hit varmints at 75+ yards accurately. These could kill a person if one were not careful with them. Gamo makes a quality air rifle, however QC is a little spotty, if you decide to pick one up look into a replacement Charlie Da Tuna trigger and tuning on the interwebs. Another thing I would like to mention is that they make air rifles all the way up into the .357 and larger range. Folks hunt big game with them. A lot of people think "air gun" and think BB plinker... that is incorrect in the high end guns.

Specs say

.177 cal. pellet that uses enhanced non-lead alloy to generate velocities up to 30% faster than conventional lead pellets

I seem to recall that kinetic energy goes by the square of the velocity. KE = 1/2 m v^2 to be specific.

Now, for their magic pellet to add 30% to the velocity, the weight would have to be much less. In fact, to get a 30% higher velocity, the new pellets would have to weigh only 59% of what the old pellets weigh.

The density of lead is 11.36 gm/cm^3, so that would put the magic pellets at a density of 6.7 gm / cm^3, which happens to be the exact density of Zamak 3.

So perhaps this is what the mystery pellets are made of? It would be so much cooler to say "When hunting gophers, ordinary lead just won't keep them from becoming zombies. That's why I shoot pellets made of Zamak 3!"

Or maybe I've had quite enough coffee this morning, thanks.

I am so, so tempted by this. I'm moving out of my apartment and into a real house. I'd love to sit on the back deck and plink stuff, but I'm concerned the neighbors would get nervous.

It appears to be a pretty good deal: it's going for around 200 elsewhere online. Man, if this were the version with the laser and light I'd be all over this. I could be like Carl in Caddyshack.

I may get it anyway, just to exercise my rights. I see that my previous zip codes in Miami-Dade are restricted (330xx), for whatever stupid reason.

Yes. The problem with the PBA pellets is that since they are lighter, they go faster. Why is this a problem? They break the sound barrier, causing the familiar "crack" of a rifle. You will need to wear hearing protection when shooting PBA's.
You can use a pellet like the Gamo Rocket, which is a heavier pellet that says consistently subsonic. Then the loudest part of the shot is the spring slamming forward. However it does contain lead.

Wow. Something on Woot that isn't a backpack.

This is NOT your boyhood Red Ryder BB gun.

I have one of these. With standard pellets it'll go thru a 3/4" piece of plywood with NO problems. The Platinum brand pellets are actually a zinc alloy and are much lighter. In my experience they are also less accurate and pricier. Just use pointed Gamo lead hunting pellets. The scope is pretty decent, good for headshots on squirrels and possums. With the right pellet it will cut one ragged hole on a target across the back yard. The price is $80 less than what I paid.

This not a plinker for kids. This is a serious weapon that produces killing power. It might be acceptable for a mature kid who wants to train on marksmanship. But I wouldn't buy these for kids to plink around with.

Don't be a fool, or be fooled. Although an air rifle, this is a seriously accurate and powerful rifle. I originally purchased mine to zing the pesky deer eating my shrubs (and every thing else). I'm puzzled by the zip code blockouts. It would make sense if they conformed to county or city boundaries, but they don't:

You can see how some counties are mostly blocked but leave a few zip codes open. And San Mateo county, below San Francisco, allows this shipped to most of it. Strange.

I looked into getting an air gun recently, and did a TON of research. Per the guy's review on amazon.com, he is still getting inconsistent groupings after 200 shots. From what I found out via research, it takes about 1,000 rounds to break in an air rifle. So, take that review with a grain of salt, I suppose.

If'n you are REALLY jazzed about air guns, look no further than the guys over at Pyramid Air: http://www.pyramydair.com/s/m/Gamo_Varmint_Stalker_Deluxe_Air_Rifle/2526

They are air rifle enthusiasts through and through.

How LOUD please? Perhaps a comparison, e.g. opening a pop-top can? Dropping a 2x4 four feet?

More than clicking a ball-point pen presumably. (Although some of the stuff the secret-squirrel military has is pretty amazing.)

PBA is firecracker loud (crack when the pellet goes transonic).
Lead pellets are quiet enough most people ignore the tiny report. Most of the noise comes from the plunger. (no 'rifle crack' sound, think paintball gun?)

One bummer about this one, vs. the Lady Recon from an earlier woot!, is that you HAVE to use the scope on this one. Because of the bull-barrel, there are no iron sights. For another ~$70 you can get the laser and light and extra scope though.
