One of the more awesome write-ups I've read in some time. As for the pack, I was given a Kelty Coyote years ago, it's taken quite a beating and is still doing pretty well. Quality shouldn't be an issue for this Sport.woot! Sale. I guess the deciding factors are the feature set and weight.

I love that it has the bottom strap for added support. Going on long bike trips or hikes, it really makes a big difference on the back.

Does anyone know if the waist strap (aka nerd belt) is removable?

By the way, before any pouncing happens, I do indeed know that the redwing and the coyote are different things; I was just making a broad generalization based upon my limited experience with a company... A much more forgive able transgression. ;)

I would hope not. This is an internal frame backpack for hiking / backpacking. The "nerd belt" is actually what supports the entire weight of the pack. The shoulder straps are really only there to keep the pack against your back and keep it from falling backwards, they aren't designed to support the weight of the contents of the pack.

From the features, "Removable waistbelt"

I have two Kelty internal frame backpacks, one larger than this and one smaller, and I absolutely adore them. I spent close to a year shopping for the right internal frame bag and Kelty's lumbar support system was far more comfortable than any other brand that I tried on. My bags have been durable - clean off easily and I've had NO trouble with tears/rips/defects (and I push my packs, trust me!) - and the compression system is amazing. I hauled nearly half my body weight through three airports today; I couldn't rave enough about the waist belt, compression straps, ease of adjustability, or quality of Kelty packs.

I'm sure you can use this as a Bug Out bag. But better look up what you need for one though.

Is this too large to bring onto the airplane as a carry-on in addition to a standard rolling luggage that fits in the overhead compartment? I need as much carry-on capacity and regular backpacks seems to be slightly on the small side.

Also, how large is it? It looks like a regular sized backpack, but at 44 ft^3, it is about the same volume as this TNF tech backpack which seems to be much bigger on the outside:

A typical daypack is in the 1600-1800 cubic inch range; this is about 2700, so this is significantly bigger. This is about the right size for a single overnight backpacking trip; maybe two nights if you pack fairly light.

I have a Redwing 3100, which is a little larger/heavier (50 liters vs. 44), but otherwise seems like it's very similar to this pack. Thinking about getting in on this deal so that I'll have a backup, since I really like the one I have.

It can take up to 5 business days for the item to leave our warehouse. Depending on the shipping method for that particular item (we use various methods), it can be much faster than that.

I have wooted a couple days in a row, and the shipping certainly varies, but almost always is pretty fast to the Bay Area in CA. The item I ordered day one of said woot-fest was the last to arrive... Approx 8 days later. The items ordered on day two got here in 2 days if I remember right... I was blown away.
That said, some items can take longer, but nothing has gone past two weeks in my memory.

Can someone answer this question and give approximate outside dimensions (medium stuffed--I know it will vary)? We'd like to know, will it pass regs as second carry-on "bag"?

I have it in orange, purchased on Amazon, and I love it. I've taken it as carry on 3 times with no problems (other than a lack of footroom). On my last trip to Spain I removed the support system (plastic backing and metal bar) and placed into my checked luggage to give myself a bit more flexibility in flight.

I used this model pack for three days/nights on the Appalachian Trail last summer...

It performed beautifully. I especially like that it is a panel loader. My two sons were both using more expensive top loaders and it was a chore for them to find items.

This is more than a day pack in terms of volume. It will easily accommodate enough gear for an overnight (or three) if you pack judiciously.

I highly recommend the Redwing.

How is their lifetime warrentee?

I used to go through a backpack or more a year, for work (carrying maybe 35lbs of tools & lunch).

I had since switched to a surplus Alice Pack,
that's lasted about 5 years, but its pretty beat up now.

If this comes apart at the seams will they cover it?

I've had this pack for about 6 months now. It's a great pack for most stuff and has tons of room. It's not too heavy, but a little weightier than some packs. Only reason I'm not using it now is because a top loader is much more useful for climbing stuff (mostly because of being able to store the rope under the top flap). But this pack offers lots of storage space and is quite durable. Mine's taken 50 ft. falls fully loaded and doesn't have a single tear. The gear loops on the back have held up very well, and the frame is very comfortable when you're lugging 60 lbs.+ of gear around.

Honestly, I never post but Kelty is great. If I recall correctly, they're based in Colorado and have great customer service. After I put an ice axe through my pack, I called them up to see what I could do. They told me to send it in then patched it up and sent back to me free of charge.

The Torso Range on this backpack is 14-18.5 Inches. This means that this is a suitable backpack for kids and small adults only. Here's a guide on how to measure for you size

Hey folks! Woke up to some great measurements and info from our sports department, so here you go:

Dimensions:

· Length: 22.5 in / 57 cm
· Width: 16.5 in / 42 cm
· Depth: 13.5 in / 34 cm
· Volume: 2650 in3 / 44 L
· Weight: 3 lb 5 oz / 1.5 kg
· Suspension: Fixed

Torso Fit Range:

· 14.5 - 18.5 in / 37 - 47 cm

They also measured a sample pack which was fully collapsed and it came to 5” depth at the belt and 3” deep on the rest of the pack.

I'm just hanging out, really.

Is this water & rain proof? Are the coating durable enough that they don't peel off after extended use?

Absolutely yes. I've used this pack on a 3-day trip to Japan (only luggage), 8-day trip (carry-on), and many trips in between. No problem fitting under an airline seat, holds a 17" MacBook Pro with no trouble at all, is super versatile. Probably the best bag I've ever bought. DH uses it as his daily commute bag as well. Still looks like new at well over a year old. It's also very comfortable even on shorties (5'0", 5'3").

I paid $75.94 shipped at eBags. If you are in the market for a great daily/travel bag, this is the one. Tried on several other bags during my search and this was the clear winner.

Just a comment on lifetime guarentee. I have an old redwing (which I think I bought over 20 years ago, and paid about this price!). A couple of the seems were unravelling and I mailed it back to Kelty. They re-sewed the seems, and the bag is back in use. I use it as a day pack on white mountain excursions yearly since I got it, and as a travel pack. It has been fantastic, comfortable and has taken a beating. I am not sure I need a new one, but will probably get one anyway.
